Chicken Invaders Universe, Between the Past & Present (2019) #2

Last time, we talked about 2018, that year had some interesting stuff.

There were admin mysteries, plan updates, and finally the early access first version, in previous
topic, we talked about all of these and more.

However there’s one thing that I found which isn’t even used…

Pre-2019 Differences

“percentgeStar.tga”, what’s is it for? It’s unknown, it’s found on the first versions but it’s no longer in game files later on.

Also, here’s a list of some stuff which later got changed.

  • None of the bosses were able to look at the player
  • Vulcan Railgun used older sprites from CI3.
  • Special Forces used Halloween sfx to later use normal chickens sfx
  • Party Time chicken used deep voice similar to Super Chicken
  • UI sfxs are only played when clicking on disabled button

When they’re changed? That’s going to be our topic, and even more, there’s even a bug that took too much to fix, what is it? We’ll know soon…

New Year versions!

Version 06

Nothing interesting, some balances, fixes. Yeah that was fast, moving on to the next version:

Version 07

Now we got new stuff, different “pods” means different weapon launch placement, each ship has its own pods.

New Exhausts were added as well:


And even more stuff like shiness color, etc…

The other new thing is Environments.
At the time, they were just visual.

For the electric planets:


And as you know, it got removed, as “they might be confused with actual harmful lighting”, I really want this effect to be back in the game. The only dangerous thing about the lightings are the warning so I don’t see any issues of re-adding it.

Wait, something is coming, CI3 bosses are going to be in the game! And now! The bosses’ eyes track the player!

Sad to know this wave is a lie…

In version 08, CI3 Bosses were added!

The yolk-star didn’t get added yet but.. Guess what? It’s going to come too!

Wait, there’s more! Asteroids now themed in?

Now, that’s cool!

Anyway, we’ll get to new version!

Version 09

Some stuff are almost done to finish the CI3 content. Some waves are left and as you know, these robo-enemies (rocket, egg ship, laser ship) aren’t in CIU.

And now we have the hot background color changes in game!

Stars have auto background color changing but with some differences.


The background is pink? Yes, there was a different coloring technique, instead of black and white filter then color, it was direct color instead.

The bad side of the old technique is that every blue background should be recolored to pink in game files.

Which is why it got changed to “worse” in future versions.

There are more stuff, like new Boss Rush mission teaser, We already have so many bosses and yet, we need such a mission! Every wave becomes a boss fight!

Now we get to the version all waited for!

Version 10

Finally Fixed Special, Party chicken voices to the current ones we all know.
Boss Rushes are here too.

And the bosses got stronger, now their attacks speed depend on difficulty, wonder how hard it was?

Watch yourself!

But before going to the next version, I wanna tell you something.

Yes, it made the well known darkness missions! It’s not exactly the same but it got tweaked to fit more with the game, now we go to…

Version 11

We now have:

  • Droids
  • Darkness Mission
  • Droid Raid Missions
  • Squawk Block Missions (no bosses yet :(..)

And all of these are like how they are now.

Version 12

More stuff came! A new boss for Squawk Block missions:

Yes, Master Squawker came before the Crazy one..

There are more:

  • More paintjobs to H&C
  • Now wormholes have their own missions, Retro Invasion
  • New Frozen Environment, it’s still visual based.
    And yes, it was from a suggestion:

Moving on to the next version, Version 13

Some changes, here and there… Some unused files removal (like the stars we talked about)

From now on, to shorten the topic, I’ll skip some versions if they’re just bug fixes or minor updates with some minor features, With that we go to version 16, yep! There’s one thing that’s interesting about it, and it is…

MEDALS!! Yep, now we have new medals appearance, and bug and idea medals.

Also, Comet chase missions were added here, yeah, that’s it.

Version 17

In this version EARLY ACCESS PARTICIPATION medal got added, what is this?

This is a treasure that makes new players want to find the closest time machine to get the early access versions, just to get that medal.

And a new boss! Looks like fans slowly make bigger roles in game development, for example, a new boss dropped this version for comet chase missions:

Some minor changes too like changing UFO ejected bread to match with in ship one, etc…

Version 18

Bossa Nova Missions are there, and a new boss!

Remember the supernova star from CI4? It’s there! As the boss!
And this boss have more code to implement, more than CI1!

Which means either the boss is too big, or just CI1 is very small and easy game to make.

Version 22

Now we have new stuff to explore! Asteroid belts! Imagine how they will cover the entire solar system and make new ways to orbit.

What? They’re just reskinned planets? Boring… But still, if it was going to cover the entire solar system, how players will orbit them?

That’s why we don’t have such as this feature.
Also, Magnetic Manipulator was also added to these missions.

But wait, what is this? Yes, it’s real, a whole series to rebalance weapons!

For who didn’t know, this series alone was very affecting in game and in forum!

  • There were specific features to test new weapons and their variables!
  • New abilities were added to the weapons!
  • Each weapon now feel different with its own unique gimmick!

But the implementation of that rework began way later, we’ll go to it in next parts don’t worry.

Version 25

A new special mission got added to the game, The Anniversary Mission, it got added to celebrate CI1 “120th” anniversary.

Sadly, this free mission turned into paid DLC in future versions with some tweaks for more accuracy.

There are some differences here and there, like there weren’t any 360o chickens.

And yes, Earth was added to the game planets menus but not for the galaxy hub.

This feature got removed sadly in the next version and now it’s only seen in the anniversary…

Speaking of Earth, it has so many land than how it’s. Yes, this got fixed in future versions but the land colors were wrong, (e.g. North Africa is grassed)

And I know, it’s not that easy to make 100% accurate earth in game (unless iA adds a texture with no color modifiers needed but will iA actually do that?)

For the anniversary itself, The Big Chicken had different designs, not just a single one:

Even tho the designs are unused, they’re posted but unfortunately, not by iA…

Yes, these old “artworks” don’t use newer drawings, they were more of cutscenes/comic remakes IMO.

And with that we go to
Version 26.

The old purple galaxy was replaced with a new 3D version:

Additionally, new SPACECARFT GOT ADDED! Yes, it’s the bomber family. There was even a whole 50 wave lenght mission dedicated to testing it.

And yes, there was a thing called BX-6… We all know it got removed in future versions. And another interesting thing!

It had orange paintjob default as default.

And now, here a new villain approaches, no, it’s not COVID, it’s something from the game, a bug, needed to be fixed.

THE LOOPING SFX

Version 27

Even though it’s “fixed”, iA cared way more about that small bug:

I remember having this bug while playing the game before joining the forum. Will it be fixed in the next version, right?

Let’s see:

Version 28

Aside from finally fixed looped sounds. there’s another thing, Key Rush$$$!!!

We had Food Rush (Droid Raid), We had Boss Rush, now we get KEY RUSH!!!
Similar to BX, there was another mission in the event sections to test it if keys are too low/high.

Looks like something is coming, after looping sfx has been fixed, don’t some people miss it?

With that iA introduces:

It’s a joke? Ah, that’s sad.

It still also makes sense to not actually add it, think about if someone enabled that option without reading and then report it repeats sounds.

Anyway now, we go to actual new content, new ENEMIES!!!

Version 29

Not just 1 or 2 but 3 enemies! What are these enemies tho?

They are:

  • Slob Chicken
  • Toxic Chicken
  • Coward Chicken

The only differences so far are “Toxic clouds” don’t use additive blending filter yet. And Coward chickens sfx sounded more like normal ones, it got changed in the next versions sooner.

Version 30

We just got 3 new enemies and yet.. more enemies got added:

  • Berserk Chick
  • Assassin Chick

The reason the update was delayed is that iA lost the source code of the new version, so he had to reimplement stuff…

And the worse is the Google used a new feature to remove repeated games, and what’s on Google Play to remove?

Multiple parts of a single franchise + duplicated versions but with skins based on seasons.

And speaking about of seasons, the next version is about it…

Version 31

The final version of the year, that year was full of content and new stuff! Now, if you’re iA, what would you do to make seasons in game?

You may say that iA will make 2 different versions of the game, one is normal and one is for the Christmas season, wait, did iA do that?

Actually no, He did it in 1 version, no normal/special editions, it all changes whenever that season comes, and will be that for very long until Seasonal Content, gets added!

And with that we finished another year!

The stars tga file is found mostly in asteroid where you hit the asteroid with a specific weapon at a specific spot where you will get the stars I literally got that

These are different stars, Asteroid stars didn’t shine and were more separated compared to the unused sprite.

on that note CI72 Endless Trash Edition used one of them as the icon

Now I understand why iA had a bug medal for himself…

This period was CIU’s golden age both from the community and game side.

This retrospective series is really nostalgic and I kinda miss how the “everything” used to be back then.

You are underselling it: This is one of the most influential moments in chicken invaders history:
The weapon rebalance program at the time was HUGE and it alone directly (or indirectly) changed how interaction started to handle the game’s balance and future content; also a lot of users used to copycat the format, increasing the quality of ideas suggested.

Release cowards were the absolute worst: they used to be even more annoying and the game used to spam them a lot due to not a lot of enemies sharing their elite class at the time.
