Yes, but it’s not simple. The reason I didn’t bother is that strobe lights are meant to flash for very brief periods of time. Fade in/out would only be effective for strobes that are continuously on.

That’s not how it works.
He can probably just make an anti-cheat that prevents getting paintjobs you aren’t supposed to get. And, make such a weird exhaust be friendly with users.

Saving any paintjob with undefined number or nothing would make the server crash right?

I just gave myself an unknown exhaust. It’s fine with the servers, but not with players who have that spacecraft loaded.
