Unless I’m not looking in the right place, seeing as you can see other players approach planets and missions, I instinctively thought I was able to play with them; as matching up with randoms online has been a childhood dream of mine since my dial-up connection childhood of CI3. Is there any way to join other players or start up private lobbies with Steam friends?

Co-op is hard to do and costs money (for server) and time (~3 months from what iA said, without any kind of updates during this period). It’s just not the priority right now, we have bigger issues, like balance and in-game economics, not to mention translation disaster after Steam release.
