So yesterday I haven’t been able to play much and didn’t end up doing any assignments and yet it says “55/72”. Does it mean how many missions were assigned out of how many were played and not how many were finished out of how many were assigned?

The first number is the number of missions assigned to this squadron (the squadron leader controls this).
The second number is the total number of times these missions have been flown by all squadron members (including the leader).
So if the leader assigns 2 missions to a squadron that has 4 total members and everyone flies both of them, you’ll see 2/8.
