A medal is something that once you receive it, it can never be taken back from you. Like your efforts during missions or achieving a consistent top rank on a date (daily or weekly mission). But in these cases, they are constantly changing.

I mean when another player takes the lead, he can take that medal without the previous player lose it (because he was in the lead before)
Anyway, i think your opinion is more logic
One of the other reasons that the cup rewarded to players depending on difficulty is already enough, along with another medals received after the mission is completed. And these single missions are not so competitive so is not so necessary.
(Also the medal design is too generic)
