The word “meme” - before it basically became a meme itself - actually just meant basically anything that gets copied shared, and spread repeatedly. And because that’s basically what memes do, that’s how the word came to refer to the images.
So to complain about a meme getting stolen seems incredibly counter-intuitive to me, because the whole point of it is for it to get spread and remade virally.
