On Asteroid missions, you can just graze them. The more stars appear on an asteroid, the more points you’ll get.

I know, but the normal asteroid wave doesn’t have the proximity bonus

Let me rephrase it: Not destroying any asteroids on Invasion missions won’t benefit you since you lose points that you can get by destroying them and possibly powerup/s. Alternatively, you can do that on Meteor missions since you can just graze them for more points and is much better than destroying them (unless you managed to graze and destroy them at the same time).
